Barnes & Noble to Sell T.S. Eliot's Remains In New "Home" Strategy

Friday, October 24th, 2008

As part of Barnes & Noble's new venture into furniture, they plan to dig up the remains of T.S. Eliot and offer them in a Lava Lamp to be marketed under the PoetryInMotion® Brand.

Home is where one starts from... ~T.S. Eliot

Not only are they using this quote in the email for lamps such, but I believe you can also get it screen printed on a wifebeater tank top. [Updated: This phrase also comes on a custom moleskine notebook - natch.]

By the way, the quote above comes from "East Coker". Here it is in context:

Home is where one starts from. As we grow older
the world becomes stranger, the pattern more complicated
Of dead and living. Not the intense moment
Isolated, with no before and after,
But a lifetime burning in every moment
And not the lifetime of one man only
But of old stones that cannot be deciphered.
There is a time for the evening under starlight,
A time for the evening under lamplight
(The evening with the photograph album).
Love is most nearly itself
When here and now cease to matter.
Old men ought to be explorers
Here or there does not matter
We must be still and still moving
Into another intensity
For a further union, a deeper communion
Through the dark cold and the empty desolation,
The wave cry, the wind cry, the vast waters
Of the petrel and the porpoise. In my end is my beginning.

Now seriously, what exactly is this company up to? Don't they sell books? Well, maybe not so much anymore...

  1. Adam Says:

D’oh! I goofed–the plural of Palantir is Palantiri…(at least according to Wikipedia. It’s been awhile since I’ve read Tolkien…)

  2. Jamie Grove Says:

My favorite in the navigation was Browse Meats, but now I can’t stop laughing at Kenny Rogers Action Figures.

Oh, yeah, I am so getting The Gambler.
